Dukan with extra fiber

I adjusted my total weight loss to include the weight I lost before going on Dukan.  I must give myself credit for all the weight I lost during the summer and the fall.

My days are mostly all PV I have not done a PP day since I am still constipated and that takes priority over all things.  Have increased my fiber is the first rule.

My body is better but not back to normal.  My main diet consists of a lot of bran in custard. I add egg white to increase the protein.  But fiber is the main stead and I am currently soaking kidney beans as I type.  The bread is in the machine with flaxseeds and lots of wheat and oat bran.

Breakfast:     Oat bran in custard, coffee.

Lunch :     Chicken soup with melted cheese and kidney beans.

Supper: Chicken soup with melted cheese, kidney beans, sliced of bread.

Snacks:  Yogurt with one cup of berries, Oat bran in custard.  Metamucil.

I finally got an email from Dr Dukan. I had signed up for coaching on August 2, when I started the diet but they never got back in touch with me until this week.  I guess it saved me a lot of money.  I have not had access to any chat sessions since I posted about it.

I already loss the weight 4 days ago , my body has been retaining the weight.

Breakfast:     ½ Ezekiel muffin, ½ tablespoon organic salt free peanut butter**, coffee with creamer**, Oats in Custard.

Snack:     Apple small*

Lunch late:     Chicken stew with green veggies, squash, 1 cup frozen berries* with 1 cup nf Greek yogurt

Supper:     Oats in Custard

Today Calories 866,  Protein 62 g, Fiber 17 g, According to My Fitness Pal at www.myfitnesspal.com.

I could not access the European Dukan chat or the forums from the US website. I used My fitness pal to analyze what I ate yesterday.

Calories 727, Carbs 23g, Fat 23g, Protein 58 grams (13 grams above daily requirement on 1200 cal. Diet), Cholesterol 403 mg (all from Dukan legal), Sodium 600 mg, Sugars 39g, Fiber 16 g (plus 5 g from psyllium)

How do people get 30 g of fiber?

Daily Loss: Gain 3 lbs

Breakfast:   Ezekiel muffin ½, 1 Tablespoon or less peanut butter**,coffee.

Snack:  1 small apple, pink lady to be exact.

Very late Lunch: (or whatever) Small gingered fish recipe, ½ small sweet potato*, one tablespoon Oats in Custard.

Supper maybe:  Baked chicken, one tablespoon Oats in Custard,one tablespoon psyllium fiber.

Late in the day and still have not finished oats from late lunch (in the freezer getting cold).  Lots to report.  Friday I got my medication assessment from my pharmacist and she reported that none of my medications are causing this severe constipation.  My Doctor said to monitor my fiber and get as much as possible, continue my water intake and take laxatives. And take other meds as well along the same lines.  I did not think I reach the age where I had to take laxatives all the time but he says that is where my body is.  I will continue Dukan modified of course.  My Oat bran of course but I will work first on fiber intake.

In the meantime I found some comments on Dukan facebook page worthy of being repeated here.

It is said that dairy can promote the production of mucus. You can cut back on it if you wish. Drink a lot of hot liquids and eat spicy foods (use cayenne wherever you can). Not sure if the dairy-mucus relationship is true. I had a bad cold last week and still ate yogurt with no added symptoms. Yogurt has good stuff for your gut (probiotics) which have been shown to be beneficial to your immune system. So yogurt can help you get better I think. If you are going to cut back, do so on everything but the FF plain Greek yogurt.”

Day 93 Cranky Dieter Looking for Relief

Breakfast:     Ezekiel English muffin, organic, unsalted  ½ Tablespoon peanut butter, coffee. Oats in custard .

Lunch:     7 slices of fried okra.   2 pieces of Jennie o

Snack:      1 cup of frozen sf berries in one Tablespoon of yogurt and ¼ cup soy milk.

Dinner:     Ginger fish, ½ small sweet potato, and cucumber salad.  Oats in custard.

Snack:    Prune juice hot,   M.O.M.

The Ezekiel English muffins are BIG.  A serving size is ½ but I did not know till later so I ate ¾ of one.  Very expensive.  I am looking forward to making my own bread.  I can put in lots of bran and flax-seed. I control the ingredients. To me, wheat bran tastes very bitter, I put orange juice in and there is no bitterness.

I am feeling better.  Less pain.   I had 2 spoonfuls of Bragg apple cider vinegar.  No big whoosh yet.  I had the pharmacist review my medications and supplements to help me figure out why I have so many problems with elimination.  I do remember an old trick that worked at times and it is called the bomb.  Mix Milk of Magnesia in hot prune juice.  I would never suggest anyone try this.

I do not have much of an appetite. But I did work hard on making a nice supper and it was good. All Dukan style.  The very small sweet potato was chosen because of the high fiber content and great color.   I forgot to buy apples but had freezer burn berries and that worked out well.

I do resent that I am always finding out more when he could have been clearer.  I have added natural psyllium fiber (thank you Miss C) due to constipation.  Now, now just today I find this on facebook.

Dukan Diet – US Hi Ali–Dr Dukan approved 1 teaspoon of flax seeds as a tolerated item for constipation.”

Too little, too late.

List of US tolerated items would be helpful.  Direction on when to use tolerated and when not to. Clear directions.  Simple clear directions.  Not information scattered all over the book and now hidden in facebook.  They should be running well monitored  forums.

I finally got my internet bill resolved.  3 tedious weeks down from $197.38 to $19.95.  “ Oh lady this new service costs nothing extra. No installation charge, no hidden charges. “  Good old AT&T trying to make money by lying to old ladies.  Three weeks of my supervisor will call you. They were waiting for me to give up.

Reading Dukan Diet Website Musings, Rules and Recommendations

Breakfast:     Coffee, pumpkin pie pudding, 1/2 bran in custard.  (All Dukanized.)

Lunch:      Scrambled eggs and turkey ham, a few pieces of pork and onions.

Snack:     NF Greek yogurt,  small piece of turkey meat loaf.

Supper:     6  Brussel sprouts,  fish in SF gingerale  and fresh ginger,  1/2 bran in custard.

Everyone is different and best thing about the Dukan Diet is it can be adjusted according to our own needs.  Rules are simple.  All else are recommendations only.

I copied the post below from Dukan US website from their forum section.  Below is moderator respond to a question about stagnation.  There are some important things we may surmise from this post.  Drink more water.  Give it time. Stagnation is normal.  Please read below, a response to a question about stagnation.

“To respond to your question, people often see stagnation as the event during which our weight fluctuates or we do not lose weight at all (or even gain weight)! This can occur to people in the Cruise Phase. The reason for this, however, is not because you are doing something wrong (at least, not usually and we can check your profile to make sure you are on track). Usually, the reason for this is because the fat burning process is different from the actual weight loss process. The explanation is a bit long, but when your body loses fat, the fat cells shrink. When the fat cells shrink, your body panics and retains water to fill those areas. Additionally, because of the release of fat, the body needs to retain even more water to detoxify yourself. Because of all this water that is retained, we often do not see actual weight loss or even a decrease in clothing size (at least not for a while). However, soon enough, your body realizes that the fat burning process is normal, releases all the water, and you experience a “whoosh” of weight loss. I hope this answers your question, but for next time I encourage everyone to open a new topic/thread when they have a question or topic that is unrelated to the first post.”

It is difficult to read the above without thinking of our hundreds of thousands of fat cells running around for water in cartoon fashion or visualizing the “release of fat”.

Here is another forum entry where the Dukan writer seems confused about the meaning of rules and recommendations. Please note, the moderator used an emoticon and it is not included.   Maybe the moderator, Tiffany, had a drink at lunch.  You can be the judge.

zero calorie, zero sugar diet sodas are allowed in the Dukan Diet. It can even be found in the book. The rules when it comes to diet soda are that you can drink it at any phase, but it is to be a treat to help with a sugar craving, not to be drunk as a fluid. When you’re thirsty drink water, not soda. Also It is recommended that you not have more than one can of diet soda a day.

Seriously, from my general readings about diets, researchers are able to define only that people who drink diet sodas lose weight more slowly than those who do not drink diet soda.  They do not know why.

I do recommend reading the Dukan Diet US website.  The forum is interesting but sparse in participation.

Everyone is different.  The best thing about this diet is can be adjusted.  Rules are simple.  The rest is recommendations only.

Keep it simple.

Breakfast:    Oat bran cooked in 1/2 c skim milk, thicken with one beaten egg, sweetened

Snack:     One hard-boiled egg. one slice Jennie extra crisp

Late lunch:    French toast,  SF caramel syrup 2 slices Canadian bacon

Late snack:  NF greek yogurt

Torture day too long,  too much.  Home very late 10:30 and I do not drive in the dark.  Bed very late.  Slept badly and woke late.  Bad.  No time to take care of me.  Lungs bad.

Tuesday

Today’s meals.

Breakfast:  Coffee with cookies 1/2 bran dose.

Snack :  yogurt

lunch:  Eggplant topped with turkey tofu spicy sauce, Chocolate shake NF NS

Snack:  small piece of salmon, one slice Jennie-o bacon.

Defrosting a small steak to have with string beans and brussel sprouts.  I hope to make a pumpkin dessert to work on my holiday menu, but I am sleepy.  Oh, I did weigh today but I do not remember what it was.

Dukan Diet and My Cholesterol

Day 46   PV          Friday                  wt 181.3     September 16

Daily Loss:      0.9 lb
Total Loss:    24.7 lb

I had my cholesterol taken at a health fair and the results were very good,  169.  I run about 200.  Never had it close to this good.

My blood sugar after eating all day was 111 which is also excellent.  So all is good news.

This mostly protein diet can be tough on the kidneys.  That is why it is important to drink a lot of water and maintain a low sodium diet according to Dr Dukan.   I imagine it must be tough on the liver as well.  I am going to have  a liver profile done before Christmas.

Mayo Clinic say “a high-protein diet may cause or worsen liver or kidney problems because your body may already have trouble eliminating all the waste products of protein metabolism. ”  Glad they agree with me since it only makes sense.  Dr Dukan does not address the liver, except as a food.  But this is a good reason not to drink alcohol at all until celebration time.  A bit dangerous for the liver and probably the kidneys,  in my opinion.  I hope I remember all that holiday time in Florida.

It is hard for me to give my food intake today.   I like to eat small amounts all day long since I do not want to get hungry away from home.

First 9 am  Coffee 2 bran cookies, qt of ice-cold water.  Half cup sf jello with some ff yogurt

10am to 4pm   Ate a wonderful pork tenderloin I cooked and sliced last night.   I kept having a slice between errands, with one qt of water.    Had slice of low-fat cheese at the store.

At four I cooked  a bunch of veggie  (frozen stir fry veggies that were desperate to be cooked) with an onion and 2 turkey bacon slices.

After 5,  if I am hungry I will eat ground beef with tomato.

Be good to your body,  it is good for you.  And you deserve all good things.

Dukan Diet Blues Side Effects Slide

Breakfast    One cookies,  coffee, 1 qt water

Lunch          2 oz hamburger,  large glass skim milk

Snack           1 Tablespoon Psyllium husks with 1 qt of water

Supper        8 ounces Greek yogurt  I will try to eat more later.  I drink 1 quart of water later in the evening.

Going at zero speed.   Trying drink water.  No appetite.  Headache and constipated.  I know I need to eat more.  I would like to just relax and take it easy but unfortunately I have to get this place in order.  Ugh. Scream.

I need to get up early and take a friend to have surgery tomorrow.  May be more involved than I wish. Skin lesion.  Headache may be due to just sheer worry.

I found out last pm that word press likes to put blogger comments  in my spam folder.  So I have recovered them and want to apologize.  I also found out that blogger will not let me post comment using my word press id.  My blogger name is klucky and word press is kathlucky.  My real name is Kathleen and I survived a very complicated surgury in 1999.  A  real mircle , hence the nicknames.

Dukan Diet Blues side effect

The worse side effect of this diet is boredom.  It is boredom of eating just protein.  It is very easy to follow just eat low fat meat, plain.  Flavors help ever so much.

The side effects of the diet (constipation and headaches) are annoying.  Most of the time I have some energy which is new for me.  So I do not like the days that I am dragging.  Stuck in neutral and struggling to get to first gear.  This diet gives me an answer:  eat more protein, pure protein.

Yesterday I had a wonderful lunch.

The best part of the lunch was visiting with my dear friends.  I feel so lucky to have them in my life.

Here is another treat I made.  I love my flavors and enjoy thinking of all I can do with Pinnapple and Coconut.  Maybe in the blender with a little skim milk, powdered milk, tons of ice plus my flavors.  MMMM

Thinking Ahead on Dukan Diet

Day 36    PP   Tues 183.6

Daily Loss:  0
Total Loss: 22.4
Wt. to go: 29.6

No weight loss no worry.  Time to examine what I did yesterday and what I consumed.  I will then look ahead with confidence.

Water not enough water.

I am trying to drink 2 quarts of water a day.  I know that Dr Dukan  says any liquid counts but based on personal experience water does count.  During a successful diet that Sis and I were on together  (1991),  we both found that we lost weight when we were consistent with water intake.  The easiest and cheapest thing to do is to drink water.

Make that water cold to use up more calories.  Another cheap and easy thing to do.   Eating all this protein is probably hard on the kidneys so let us be good and drink plenty of water so the kidneys can work properly.  Two quarts of water is plenty.

This diet has side effects.

Unfortunately, constipation is a problem and not a pleasant one.  That problem is one that I truly hate and there is no easy answer.  Dr Dukan said in his book or on Dukan US  Facebook page, to replace one tablespoon of oat bran with wheat bran to see if that well help.  I feel less lethargic on oat bran and the change did not help.

Thinking ahead on Dukan diet is important on days when there is no weight loss.  I am looking forward to my vacation with my sister at Christmas time in Florida.
